be a girl boss

When I was growing up, I was a feminist before I even knew what a feminist was. I grew up in a household where my parents were even partners in everything. However, my mom made more money than my dad and my dad was the one who would cook and do the weekly grocery shop. I thought this was normal, until I started spending time at my friends houses and saw their family structure. I have to point out that feminism is about having the choice between being a stay at home mom or being a doctor. My mom actually was able to do both when my brother and I were growing up. When my mom decided to be a stay at home mom to spend more time with the kids,  my dad immediately took on the financial responsibilities. When my mom wanted to go back to work, my dad stepped aside to allow my mom make the big bucks again. I have to give my dad a lot of credit for not letting social norms affecting how they created their family structure.

In college, I took a lot of classes about families and the women’s movement. Taking these classes it was a big wake up call. I was so blessed to grow up in a house where I believed I could do anything I wanted. My mom was involved in the Vietnam protests and the Women’s Movement in the 1970s. I thought the fight was won. Until this years election season, I realized how much more of a fight we have to win. Continue reading “be a girl boss”

gifts for galentines day

When I was a freshman in college, my parents surprised me at my dorm room for Valentine’s Day. I got a phone call from the front desk letting me know that a very large package had been delivered. I was very confused as to why it did not go to the package center, but I went down to the dorm lobby anyway. When I got off of the elevator, my parents had bouquets of roses, chocolates and other presents for me. I had a boyfriend at the time but still that gesture from my parents was the best Valentine’s Day gift ever. It doesn’t matter if you are single or in a relationship, you still need to show your girl friends some love on Valentine’s Day!

Right now the only man in my life is my cat, but that doesn’t mean us single girls cannot celebrate Valentine’s Day! Honestly, it is one of my favorite holidays because everything turns pink. If you know me at all, you know pink is my favorite color! Last year I made an effort to spend the holiday with my girlfriends instead of sitting around feeling bad for myself and it was the best decision I ever made. I hate the idea that Valentine’s Day is only for people who have a significant other. I would much rather spend the day celebrating my friendship with my gals, because they been my by side the longest.

This Valentine’s Day grab your girlfriends and go to dinner, see a movie and grab some drinks at a bar. This year I am flying to Georgia to see one of my best friends and former college roomie for Valentine’s Day. We are going to see the new 50 Shades movie, eat some Chick-Fil-A and it sounds like the perfect way to share the hallmark made up holiday.

If you don’t have a Valentine, you should just spoil your gals instead!

cutest galentines day gift ideas
1. Pink Pajamas I am obsessed with the Victoria’s Secret pajamas and own the classic pink striped set. It is the perfect gift to give your BFF and it doesn’t hurt to get yourself a matching set! In college my roommate and I would go to Victoria’s Secret and get matching pajamas all the time. I think it is so much fun to match and have a little girls night once in a while.
2. Macaroons If you need a small gift for one of your Galentine’s or a coworker, you can pick up really cute Macaroons from Marshalls or TJ Maxx for like $3. Macaroons with a cute card is a nice little gesture to know you are thinking of them because no one likes to get nothing on Valentine’s Day.
3. EOS Lip Balm If you get me lip balm, you will automatically become my hero! I have an EOS in my car, in every purse I use, next to my bed… you get the point! This is a gift that every girl can use.
4. Essie Pink Nail Polish Surprise your BFF with a girls day and get mani & pedis. I love to get my nails done, but hate to go alone. Essie just came out with new pink shades in their gel ballet collection and it is the best nail polish brand I have ever tried. Get your BFF a nail polish and in the card let her know that you are kidnapping her for a girls day. I can promise she will get in the car willingly!
5. Cute Makeup Bag TJ Maxx and Marshalls always have cute makeup bags for cheap, so it is a great gift to give if you have a lot of girlfriends to get gifts for! I love the ones that have cute little sayings on them, and to make it a bit more special you can fill it up with other small gifts too. The best part is, they will use that makeup bag for years to come!
6. Socks As an adult, socks are one of the best present you can get for someone. Especially cute ones with animals and hearts on them!
7. Cake Pops If you want to bring something into the office for Valentine’s Day, you can make cake pops or pick up a few from Starbucks while you are getting your morning coffee. I mean everyone loves cake, so you will immediately become the favorite in the office!
8. Starbucks Travel Mugs Right now Starbucks has the cutest collection of mugs and travel cups for coffee. For a girl friend that is difficult to shop for, pick up a cute mug and get a Starbucks gift card for them. After my surgery, one of my best friends sent me travel mug with a Starbucks gift card and I actually cried because it was a very sweet and thoughtful gift because she knew I liked coffee that much!
9. Too Faced Chocolate Bar Every girl deserves chocolate on Valentine’s Day… so if you really like your BFF and have the money, this is the gift for her!
Buy yourself some Valentine’s Day candy, some new pink nail polish and a new lipgloss and enjoy the holiday. Don’t spend the day in bed feeling bad for yourself. I promise spending it with your Galentines is a lot more fun than eating dinner with a guy! 😉

valentines day goodies at target

I love to give people presents. It brings me a lot of joy to put a few things together and give them to a friend. I have a few different plans for Valentines Day planned with some galentines, so I went to Target recently to get some presents. I suggest shopping now because these things never last and quickly disappear from the shelves!

The Dollar Section is amazing right now! I brought home the cake tray and it took a lot of self control not to bring home the glitter pillows. The kitchen towel sets are perfect for moms or friends who have their own apartments for Valentine’s Day.

Lots of cute Valentine’s Day home decor items in the Dollar Bin that will help you decorate your home for the holiday! Or if you are like me and obsessed with pink… now is the time to buy pink decor!

Funemployment

14468489_10154601238533149_4449831845463404629_o.jpg

September 30th was the last day at my first job out of college. It has been an amazing experience where I learned a lot, made a lot of mistakes and grew as an employee as well as a person. The beginning of the summer season, deep in my gut I knew my time was coming to an end at that job. I have always worked since I was 14, part time and full time, but this was my real first adult job. While I knew my time at my job was limited, the next challenge was how to tell my employer. Then I needed to make my plan for what happens next once I quit my job. Due to the nature of my job, it was not fair for me to quit in the middle of summer when it is the busiest time of the year. I gave my employer two months notice of my leaving, which is rare to give that much time for the employer to find a replacement. I found a template on Google and just changed the words around to fit my needs.

Funemployment sounds like a lot of fun! And it can be if it is planned out correctly… I thought I would share some of the steps and planning I had to do before I put in my resignation letter.

Let’s Look At The Financials

Before I decided to quit my job, I had to consider the financial consequences that followed. A lot of questions went through my mind before I handed in my resignation letter, and a majority of them had to deal with money.

  1. How much money do I need a month?
  2. How much can I spend a month without going broke?
  3. How much money do I need to pay my bills a month?
  4. How much spending money do I need a month?
  5. How much do I have in my savings?
  6. How can I save money better?

This life change made me reevaluate my spending habits and how much I need to make a month to pay my bills. While I was still working I made a list of what I spent money on and came up with ways to cut back spending. No more buying coffee or buying food instead of cooking! These small changes made significant changes in my efforts to save money.

Financial Goals

  1. I came up with an amount I wanted in my checking and savings account at all times. My checking account contains one months spending x2 and my savings has an amount that makes me comfortable in case there are any emergencies or I decide to go on vacation. A savings account should have three months of expenses saved away.
  2. Pay off all credit cards before resigning from my job. I try to put all of my expenses on my credit card so I can take advantage of the rewards and build up a credit score.
  3. Create a budget on how much you want to spend on eating out, shoes, and groceries. When I saw how much money I was spending on frivolous things when I wrote them all down it got easier to cut those things out of my spending habits.
  4. I quickly found a job before I resigned from my current job, but I wanted to take two weeks off in between jobs for an easier transition. Know I was going to be funemployed for two weeks I knew I needed enough money in my savings to cover that time of no money coming in.
  5. Have enough money saved to move out in the next few month. This has been a big goal of mine for over a year now. I know that what I make now cannot support me and cover the costs of an apartment. One of my big budget goals is to save up to be able to afford an apartment along with my other expenses.

Everyone budgets money differently and has different priorities when it comes to spending. This life change made me look at my spending habits differently and discover new ways to save money. With my next job I plan to put more of my paycheck into my savings to be able to move out and afford an apartment within the year.

It is day three of my funemployment and this whole not setting an alarm is fantastic! I also haven’t washed my hair or made any effort on my appearance the whole weekend and it is a nice break to be lazy for once. The main reason I can enjoy my funemployment this much is because I took the time to make plans financially and got a new job with a start date giving me some time off before I started my new adventure.

Fall To Do List

Last fall was the first time in years I was actually able to enjoy fall and all of its cliche fall things to do! When I was in college, my weekends were spent in the library writing papers and I did not have the time to do as many things as I wanted. Cold weather did not mean cute accessories- it meant I had to walk to classes in the cold weather which was never fun!

Living with my parents does not sound like the greatest life plan. However, it was great to be able to force them out to a pumpkin patch or have my moms fall decor to decorate the house with. This fall I hope to make more of an effort to make plans with friends and do fall things. I already have a pumpkin picking day and blog photoshoot with a friend planned, a day in the city and lots of plaid hanging in my closet ready for any fall adventure!

Fall To Do List

At the start of each month I like to make a to do list of things I want to do that month. During the fall it is still warm but cool enough to do some outdoor activities and as I said before, I love summer, but I love the fall wardrobe more!

Hello September!

Can you believe we are already talking about fall? This summer flew by, but was filled with wonderful weather and great beach days. I love summer, but I cannot wait to start dressing in layers and decorating the house. This summer I have been wearing Lilly and bright colors everyday. I am craving cozy cashmere sweater weather! I wore pants this past week for the first time since May and my legs broke out in rashes all over. Even my body is rejecting cooler weather months! This fall brings changes in weather, wardrobe and our personal lives. This fall starts a new chapter for me and I hope for you too! Go get yourself a PSL and enjoy the change in leaves and weather.
