How To Decorate Your Bedroom Like An Adult

Even though I graduated college in 2015 and I am taking a break before getting my Masters, in the fall I can’t help but get excited when I see the school supplies and dorm bedding go up in stores. I may have bought a new notebook (or two) and some post its while at Target the other day because I couldn’t help myself. What I miss most is moving into a new room and getting to decorate it. Each year it was a blank canvas and I had the opportunity to make it my own.

Last fall I did a complete renovation of my guest room and recently just updated it again. This is what happens when I go to Target and fall in love with the new room decor they have! With the house going on the market, we are doing some renovations on the house and especially the way the rooms are decorated. My childhood bedroom has been going through some big changes lately. While in college, I spent very little time on it, so I did not really care how it looked. Now that I am living back at home I need a room that fits my style better and is functional.

Creating an adult bedroom or living space is a little more complicated than moving into a dorm room. I no longer have another house holding all of my belongings. Everything has to fit in my room which has caused a lot of purging and creative storage.

With a few trips to Target and some new additions, my room is starting to feel like an adult lives in it.

Curtains are a must have in a room in my opinion. They add privacy and keep the sun out of the room when you want to sleep until noon on a Sunday. In my guest room, I spent two months looking for the perfect curtains to create the look I wanted in the room. With very little on the walls, it looks like a completed room with them up.

Baskets are helpful for keeping things off of the floor. After a long day, I don’t have time to put clothes away or decide if a dress needs to be washed. I have a basket at the end of my bed that holds pillows and extra throw blankets. Another basket is in my closet that I throw everything into and sort later. And under my desk, I have a basket that holds my purses and hats that are hidden and out of sight. I have one from Pottery Barn and two from Target that is affordable.

If you know me at all, you know I am obsessed with candles. Every night I try to spend some alone time in my room tidying up or my nighttime skincare routine. I have a candle lit at night because it helps with winding down from the day and they smell delicious.

I got rid of a lot of my knick-knacks and decor that was already in my room and replaced it with simple items I could use and not just collect dust. At night I love to sleep with a million blankets but when I am not using them I like to have them rolled up in a basket by my bed when they are not in use. It makes the room very homey, something I am trying to achieve. I love the look of mirrors so I have 4 in my bedroom alone but I really do use all of them! I have a giant gold mirror that takes up a big part of my wall because it matches the gold theme in my bedroom. Instead of putting up a painting or poster, a mirror is a lot more useful. Over the years I have built a very large book collection, so I am always reading four books at one time. Instead of having magazines and books looking like clutter on my nightstand I got gold bookends to keep everything organized. I am currently obsessed with lamps from Target (the one above specifically). It is $14 with a variety of lamp shade colors and when on sale is $7. I got a blue one for my guest room and it ties together the whole beachy theme. For my bedroom, I used my mom’s glass lamp from Pottery Barn.  Let’s hope she doesn’t notice it has disappeared!

When redecorating my room I took everything off the walls and took everything off the shelves to dust and start fresh. That’s when I realized what I needed to throw out and saw how much space this junk was taking up. Four bags to goodwill later…. my room is a lot cleaner! Be sure to wander around Target or HomeGoods (especially clearance) and try to pick out a few pieces that add character and/or purpose in your room. It looks best when you put three or an off number of items together. My nightstand has my lamp, a picture frame, and a matching clock and it adds a lot of personality to the space. 6615d3ebe29ae723ebbf938eace2a66a

I love my bed. It is my favorite part of my room and I look forward to going to bed every night because of how amazing it is. I thought it was just me who was obsessed with my bed, but now whenever I have people over I literally have to drag my friends out of it. I had a friend sleepover one night and she chose to sleep in my bed with me instead of having her own room in my house. That is how much people like my bed! The mattress is from Costco but what makes it comfy and cozy is the obnoxious amount of pillows I have on my bed. In the summer I have my summer bedding with coral and grey pillows and comforter. In the winter I switch over to grey and red for the holiday season and I have even more pillows! Homegoods and Target have great sales on pillows, so I am always collecting more even though I need to stop. When a friend of mine moves into a new apartment or it’s their birthday, I always give them a pillow and a matching throw blanket. It is not something we usually give ourselves, but I promise with a few new pillows your bed will be changed forever!

Even though in the fall we are not all going back to school or moving to another apartment, it does not mean you can’t update your bedroom! You are growing up and your room should grow with you. My freshman year dorm room was full of pink and I have slowly moved on to a blue color theme that better fits my age and personality. Take advantage of the back to school sales and make your space yours!

sundays at the farmers market

One of my goals all summer was to wake up early one Sunday morning and go to the farmers market in Asbury Park. Asbury Fresh is just a short walk away from my house across the bridge in Asbury.I finally set the alarm on Saturday night and sacrificed my only day to sleep in to get my butt out of bed and to the farmers market. I love love love fresh fruit and veggies. Jersey is called the Garden State and we live up to that nickname. In the summer my family and I travel around Jersey to different farms to get our produce. I mean, how cool is that?? I love my Weggies. but there is just something about fresh picked Jersey tomatoes.

When sunflowers are only a dollar it takes a lot of self control not to buy a dozen and just go home with three of them!

We hosted a family lunch later that afternoon and the flowers came in handy! We went with a shore theme using blue glasses and white rectangle dishes. If you want to invest in pieces for entertaining I suggest buying dishes. Easy to store and really make the meal fancy. We bought ours a few years ago, but you can buy similar ones at Target.

The hydrangea bushes outside of my house are finally blooming so my whole house is decorated with fresh flowers in every room.

Mini bar all set up for the luncheon.

red, white, & a fun filled weekend!

When I say I have been planning for the Fourth of July since January, I am not kidding!
For work I will be organizing my towns Fourth of July parade, which is  a really really realllly big deal! I have 58 groups, 4 marching bands, 35 automobiles and an alarm set for 5:30am for Monday morning. I have spent hours this week finalizing plans and small details for the parade day. I will be posting another post hopefully sharing my adventures on the Fourth!

Sunday is technically the only day I have off and I plan on enjoying every single moment of it. Today is the first time in weeks I have not had to set my alarm and now I am in bed blogging to start the day. I wish every day started like this!

Be sure to go back and check out my Memorial Day blog post for some party inspiration!

The week leading up to the Fourth I was very patriotic in my outfits!

FullSizeRender (27).jpgI have had this dress on my wish list for a while now and even wrote about it here. It was on the clearance rack for $7 at Old Navy and it is adorable but comfortable for work. Right now they are out of this print online but I encourage you to go to the store and buy this style in every print! Right now (Saturday only) dresses at Old Navy are only $8. Keep an eye out for similar sales towards the end of summer. A lot of my favorite work dresses are from Old Navy and have lasted for many seasons.

At work on Friday I really got into the season with a dress I wear every Fourth and Memorial Day! It’s a navy blue stretch dress with poka dots making it so much fun to wear to work. It is old from Banana Republic but right now the whole store is on sale so go now to stock up on work dresses! Banana Republic always has classics to wear to work that you can wear for many years and never go out of style. I paired my dress with sandals from Gap and my red Ray Bans. It is really hard to hide my American Pride this week!

Be sure to run to Old Navy today to pick up your Fourth of July shirts! For years they just sold the white shirts or tank tops holiday shirts, but now they are more creative (and adorable!). As always, they are super cheap and make a great holiday outfit!

On Saturday I had a few hours by the pool in my new favorite patriotic bikini from Target. The best thing about Target is that they are affordable and have styles for everyones body type. While I love swim from VS I feel like my body type does not always fit in their styles. They have a whole line of patriotic swimwear in different styles to fit your body type. Mine is perfect for flat chested gals like me but they make tops for more support if you need it. This swim is adorable and will be worn for many summers to come! Hurry to Target before they are all sold out!

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

When life gives you lemons…

A friend of mine gave me a present because when she saw, it she immediately thought of me and was she correct! When I saw it, I squealed! It was perfect! I needed it! It was this tiny lemon pitcher and it so cute! I found one on Etsy so you can purchase one yourself. It is perfect for summer lemonade and decorating. I think lemons are going to be my new theme of the summer!IMG_6895

I feel like lemons are everywhere lately!
In the summers I love to grab a big bag of lemons from Wegmans and fill clear canisters with them. It is an inexpensive way to bring summer into my kitchen and lemons usually last a while so I do not have to change them that often.
I am happy to see this lemon trend popping up everywhere!

In my guest bathroom, we have the lemon soap and lotion set from Bath & Body Works becomes it smells delicious and the bottle is so cute! The bottles from Bath & Body Works makes the bathrooms look so cute too!

Food themed pool floats are in and now I feel like I need a lemon pool float to carry on the summer theme! You can purchase one at Target or Amazon. I have a tiny pool but if I had a million dollars, I would have all of the different kinds in my giant pool!

NY&Company had a dress last season with lemons on it which was adorable! It is currently 50% off and I regret not getting it the last time I was at the store.

Reese Witherspoon has her new Southern Lifestyle company called Draper James and she uses lemons as her inspiration. This lemon print dress is adorable and very Southern. She uses this print multiple times in her online store.

I am inspired by this party for the Draper James Anniversary Party thrown by Reese Witherspoon herself. The theme was lemons since that is her main print for the brand and  I am in love!

Make yourself a glass of fresh lemonade (recipe here) and enjoy summer! In the summer, all I drink is iced coffee and lemonade. I’ll spend hours by the pool lounging and drinking lemonade because it is so refreshing on  a hot day!

Yellow is usually a color we are told to stay away from because it is a very bold color that few people can pull off. I feel like in 2016 that fashion rule needs to be broken! From beach cover ups to work outfits, this summer the color yellow is in!
