Hello, January

Every month on the blog I would start with a post called “Hello”.  It was a great way to share some of my favorite things like clothes, deals, home decor and recent Netflix recommendations. The last few months, my personal life has gotten in the way of my Hello Series. I thought I would start it back up in January since it is the start of the new year and all. Today I am sharing my favorite closet additions of 2016. I made a goal in early 2016 to better invest in my closet. I had a lot of clothes, but they were low quality and would not last more than a season. I started the year by purging my closet of all of my clothes from high school (we all have that shirt we can’t part with!) For years I picked out clothes because they were cheap, but then I found that they would look worn or fall apart after a year. So in 2016, I started to invest in nicer pieces to add to my closet. I might have gotten a little carried away!

I thought I would share some of my favorite closet additions of 2016 and why I chose to invest in them. If you have any questions about any of them, just ask in the comments

favorite closet additions 2016
1.      In December, my family and I purged our coat closet because it was literally over flowing with coats. We went through the coats and I personally donated 5 to Goodwill. I highly encourage everyone to do this. Now that I have all of this free space in the coat closet, I decided it was time to splurge on a coat. I recently bought a new winter coat the last two winters, but realized that most of my coats were from high school or early college. I decided it was time to purge and it was definitely time to buy a new coat! While it may not be as warm as my big puffy coat I bought last winter, it is definitely a lot prettier. I came home with the red coat from J. Crew Factory and luckily my parents bought it from me so it could count as a birthday present.

2.      One thing I have a lot of (besides shoes) are vests. I own a lot of vests in different colors and I like to find ways to wear them while grocery shopping or at work. I hate when I go shopping and I start to sweat as soon as I walk into the store because of my bulky coat. With the right layers I can be comfortably warm while running errands. Or at work I like to wear a button down or a nice sweater with a matching vest. I bought two new vests this fall while working at J. Crew. I bought a hot pink vest that was on clearance so of course I needed it. I also purchased the classic Herringbone J. Crew vest that I wear twice a week to work. I love the J. Crew vests because they are lightweight, but still keep me warm.

3.         The last few years I have been trying to buy a new pair of black boots, but found the task impossible. My only pair of black boots are from Sophomore Year of college and are in horrible condition. I can’t wear them when it rains because there are holes in the soles! It took me six hours of shopping at different stores to find the perfect boots the first time, so I knew finding a replacement would be tricky. During Cyber Monday, I found Tory Burch boots for less than $200. Score! I don’t mind spending money on things I know that will last and are made well. I was skeptical about buying boots online, but this was an amazing purchase! You can tell they are good boots because when I take them off they don’t get flimsy or fall over, but keep their shape.

4.          At work I prefer to wear dresses or skirts instead of pants because pants never fit me correctly. I had a pencil skirt, but I just did not like the corporate look to it. My other black skirt was like a Taylor Swift style short skirt and tricky to pull off at work. Luckily I found a black sidewalk skirt on the clearance rack at J Crew Factory and now I wear it every week with a different button down or sweater look. With some tights and boots I can dress it up and make it work appropriate. This is a great investment and the best part is that the skirt comes in different colors and patterns.

5.          Booties were very in this past year and while I wanted to buy a dozen pairs, my budget only allowed me to buy one pair. After some research and browsing online, I found the best deal for my budget was purchasing the Trolley booties from BP at Nordstrom. They are a well made shoe, so I can stand on my feet for hours without my feet hurting at the end of the day. Right now they are on sale because it is the end of the season, so be sure to buy them for the rest of the season.

6.         Fun fact, I had difficult time learning how to tell time and I still struggle with it. It’s actually really embarrassing! After graduating from college, I really wanted to purchase a nice watch to wear. After working in the adult world, I found that I couldn’t just take out my phone and check the time. I think us Millennials are so used to having our phones to tell us the time and tell us the weather. When I started to work in an office, I had a hard time dealing with this separation of my phone. It sounds silly, but try not using your phone for a day. It feels weird! I like to constantly know the time, so having a watch was a nice fashion accessory, but also a necessity. Last winter, my parents gave me the gold Kate Spade watch and this Christmas I gave myself a silver Kate Spade watch. I personally am not a fan of the Michael Kors watches because I feel like everyone has one. Kate Spade watches are unique and fit my preppy personality.

7.        My style has started to become more and more preppy, especially after working at J. Crew. I needed new earrings for work and fell in love with a bigger pearl earring look while shopping at Nordstrom one day.  It is a subtle change from my usual small pearl earring look, but I like doing something different once in a while.
8.        For months I have had my eyes on the Kate Spade initial necklace. On Cyber Monday, it was on major sale and after eating some pumpkin pie I bought it online from Nordstrom. I wear it every day and I love that it is tiny, but adds a little sparkle to my look. I have a lot of large necklaces, but only a few small, dainty necklaces. I own a small diamond necklace from Tiffany, so now I like that I have another option that is just as cute.

9.         On television, you see girls wearing heels to work everyday. However, I will never be the girl who can rock a stiletto in the workplace. I started to buy a lot of flats last year to wear to work, but I loved the classic Tory Burch Minnie Travel Ballet Flat. I got a part time job and saved up my pennies to purchase the flats during the summer. Totally worth it! It is a shoe I will wear for years and I chose the black on black look since it will go with everything.

10.        I felt like every blogger I saw had the nude Tory Burch Miller sandal and I neeeeded them. I grew up living at the beach, so I live in flip flops in the summer. But as I am getting older I realized I needed a nicer sandal. Again, I saved up my pennies and bought myself a present! I like that the Tory Burch Miller Sandal can be worn for every occasion making my purchase worth the splurge.
img_1162
11.       I purchased the Brewster T-Shirt Lilly Pulitzer Dress during the summer and fell in love with the fit. I purchased a few more T Shirt dresses from Lilly because I love how comfortable they are, but they look super cute. If you are going to buy a Lilly dress anytime soon, I suggest purchasing a T Shirt dress because they are easy to throw on and can be worn to multiple occasions.

12.        I am one of those girls who do not lose sunglasses. With that talent I like to splurge on a nice pair of sunglasses. Luckily Costco had some pretty Kate Spade sunglasses so I scored on a good find! If you are going to buy new glasses or sunglasses, I suggest you go to Costco to get brand name frames for cheap!

Okay, someone take my American Express away from me in 2017. I am not allowed to do anymore shopping for a long time!

cozy sweater

wear-it-wednesday

Todays post features one of my favorite items in my closet during the winter months. Right now we are have a noreaster in Jersey and it has been raining alllll day. I woke up this morning and changed into a different pair of sweatpants and put on a comfy sweater. In the winter, sweaters are a closet staple for me and I try to wear them everyday. At work I can make sweaters look work appropriate by adding a collared shirt underneath. But as soon as I get home, I throw on another comfy sweater to relax in. On my days off I usually just wear leggings and sweaters. Seriously guys… I am obsessed!!

Last week my family and I went out to lunch last minute, so of course I threw on some jeans and a sweater from The Loft. This sweater is no longer available, but I swear the Loft has some of the most comfy sweaters!  Post Christmas is the best time to stock up on sweaters because stores are trying to get the stores emptied to make room for resort wear. Right now at The Loft there is a big sale so run on over and stock up!

Morning Miracles

dry shampoo

Hit the snooze button tomorrow morning!  I dare you!
The only way I get out of the house on time in the morning is by using dry shampoo. My favorite is Batiste because it gives my hair some volume that I lose after day two of dirty hair and it really does feel clean. Since I color my hair I cannot wash my hair every day or else it gets dry and it causes breakage. You can buy this dry shampoo in different scents and there are ones made specifically for blondes and brunettes. I use the blonde dry shampoo in between highlights and root touch ups because it is a great way to hide my roots! Batiste has been a life saver lately especially when I work the night shift and don’t have the energy to wash my hair after work. I swear I shower every day, but to wash, dry and straighten my hair is a pain in the butt and takes a few hours. This is an investment you need to make in 2017 because I think we will do anything for a few more minutes of sleep in the morning!

Here’s a look I wore back when we had snow in Jersey! It was the day my family and I  were going to Ikea to buy me a new dresser. Before leaving the house I threw on my Lululemon leggings, a black long sleeve shirt and Uggs, an outfit I have been wearing literally every day lately! After I looked in the mirror I told myself I needed to make more of an effort before leaving the house! In the winter months, I feel like all I wear is the color black, I literally live in my Lululemon leggings and Uggs.I have been making more of an effort to wear color during these cold, winter months.

I finally had an excuse to wear some of my birthday and Christmas presents! This sweater is from Banana Republic and while I cannot find the exact one, I did link a similar one below. It is so cozy and perfect for the winter months. I find myself buying boring black sweaters, so I love that I finally had a colorful sweater in my wardrobe. I am blessed with friends who spoil me because also I got a Tory Burch bag for my birthday that has been on my wishlist for a while. It was the perfect addition to this outfit for our little outing. I scored Tory Burch boots when they were on major sale during Cyber Monday.  If you are going to invest in new boots, I suggest investing in Tory. Just wait for a sale and it makes the purchase a bit easier!

sharing my love for swedish organization

I went to Sweden!

Okay, just kidding…  I went to Ikea!

Ikea’s philosophy is when you make room for organization, you make room for a better start to your day. In 2017, I think we can all make room for  better days.

Last week I started a new series on the blog called “#goals”. We all create resolutions in the new year and create goals for ourselves, but do we actually keep them after February? Every week I want to update you all One of my biggest goals that I have every year is to clean my house and declutter my life. Last week I started a Home Organization Challenge on Facebook and started with the kitchen.

Last week my family and I went to Ikea for a day trip. I love Ikea because everything in the store is made to create an organized home. If you know me at all, you will know that I love everything in my life to be organized. Now that doesn’t mean everything in my life is always organized either (currently staring at a chair in my room covered in clean laundry that still has to be put away). I was walking through the store and I kept gasping with things I *needed*. My mom kept saying I was having an “O O” or an Organization Orgasm LOL GUYS, I just really like to have a clean and organized home. While I was there I picked up a few things to help me in my Home Organization Challenge. You can’t have an organized home without the right tools and a plan.

You can have a big kitchen or a little kitchen,  but if you don’t have a proper organization system, your kitchen will always be a mess. When I was at Ikea we picked up some drawer organizers and I immediately rushed home to organize the drawers. Everything has a place in the kitchen. Doesn’t this drawer look so much more organized? Even the junk drawer is organized (ish).

img_3756img_3757img_3755

I swear one of my favorite hobbies is cleaning my kitchen. I usually spend two to three hours cleaning it. Yes, I am that crazy! But now that I spent all last week cleaning, organizing and purging my kitchen, my weekly clean up will be a lot easier. Everything has its own place in the kitchen. If it didn’t fit, I donated it or moved it to another place.

While I was cleaning and taking every thing out of the cabinets, I also collected Christmas and summer kitchen items and put them in their proper boxes downstairs in the basement. It’s something that always happens every year as the holidays go by and we forget to put away kitchen items, but once I put everything in its proper place I found a lot more room in the cabinets. Who knew under the kitchen storage could look so organized?? This organizer came from the dollar store, so if you can’t get to an Ikea you should go to the dollar store to pick up some storage containers.

This week I am continuing the Home Organization Challenge and  working on my pantry. I just cleaned and organized it in September, so I am sure this will be an easy week. The pantry in our kitchen is big and it is where everything just gets thrown in when we want to clean the house quickly. But after I created a new organization system in the pantry last fall, it is very easy to tidy it up a bit every few weeks.

Let me know if you are joining me in the home organization challenge and  know how your progress is going in the comments!

life isn’t perfect, but your hair can be

I wanted to let you know that I washed my hair today. You are probably like, okay..but why are you telling us that you washed your hair? With my work schedule, I wash my hair two times a week because it takes so much precious time out of life to do. My hair routine revolves around dry shampoo because my hair gets oily very fast. With my frizzy hair I often have to use serums and products to keep my hair tamed which causes oil and more dry shampoo is needed. In my calendar I plan when to wash my hair, that is how little time I have to style my hair!

img_3683img_3692img_3693img_3697img_3698img_3699

While I try to spend as little time as I can fussing with my hair during the week, I also spend a lot of money on my hair and a lot of time in a salon chair. I am at the salon at least once a month and block off time in my calendar to spend time on my hair. I get a lot of compliments on my hair because it is healthy and dyed a perfect shade of blonde. With a new year, comes an urge to make a drastic change with our hair. If you are thinking about going blonde, going for a major chop or getting bangs, here are some tips and advice.

1) Go to a Professional

When I was a freshman in high school I started dyeing my dirty blonde hair blonde platinum blonde. Once a month, I would have my mom dye my hair with box dye and while I loved the look and the low costs, after a few years I started to see the damage it did to my hair. I always had long hair, and I was forced to do a major chop to get my healthy hair back. Now that I found a salon that I love (and trust) I know that I can sit down in the chair, stroll Instagram and not look back up until it’s all done! It usually takes a few appointments for them to correct any color damage or hair mistakes from a previous salon. I found a hair salon that allows you to have a Hair Membership- it’s like a gym membership where you only pay a monthly fee and can get unlimited hair cut, color and blowouts. Every month I book a root touch up, every two months I get a trim and every 3-4 months I get new highlights. With this investment, I can protect my hair keeping it healthy and shiny in between salon visits.

2) Use The Right Hair Products

I am always the bargain hunter, but a few years ago my hair stylist lectured me on using the right products for my hair. Using a cheap shampoo is great for the wallet, but you are literally washing money down the drain. My hair started to get brassy, I was losing my blonde and my hair looked like bleh. Influenster reached out to me and analyzed my hair with a questionnaire. I love the blow out look I get from the salon, but lack the energy to use various hair tools and a million products to achieve the look. Influenster and Loreal sent me a package of L’Oreal Hair Expertise Extraordinary Clay Mask, Shampoo  & Conditioner. My roots are oily, my ends are dry and with every product I use it fixes one issue and damages the other. I have used the Loreal Hair Shampoos and Conditioners for years, but with the broad line of shampoos I never knew which one to use!img_3607img_3608img_3609img_3610img_3611

Plus, I love the blue colors of the bottle because it looks so pretty in my shower! After one use, I loved the way my hair air dried and it felt very clean. My hair also kept its blonde color post shower which is a huge plus!

3) Invest in a hair mask.

I use a face mask twice a week and have a moisturizer routine every night, but I didn’t see the benefit of using a mask. But then I did my research! After using the L’Oreal Hair Expertise Extraordinary Clay Mask I cannot imagine a shower without using one now! It is important to know that not all hair care products are made equal! Lately, hair care is changing drastically. So take advantage of the changes and improvements in hair care. On Pinterest, there are all of these DIYs with mayo and eggs and I was not letting any of that touch my hair! But now companies like Loreal are investing in hair products.

img_3612img_3616img_3615img_3613

L’Oreal Hair Expertise Extraordinary Clay Mask is applied to dry hair and left on for 5 minutes. I was happily surprised by the clay, it was a smooth texture without any gritty feeling. It is light and airy and not like a dense clay like I was expecting.  This combination makes applying super easy and easy to wash out.  The result is clean and silky hair without having to apply any other products.  I am in love with my hair and I want the world to know it!

5) Protect your shine

The sun, product build-up, overuse of hair tools and chlorine all dull your hair color and dull your shine.

6. Purple Shampoo

To prevent my hair from looking brassy , use a purple shampoo. This helps hair from turning brassy, which is my biggest hair problem. Once a month I use a purple shampoo and I recommend this one!

Thank you to Influenster and Loreal for sponsoring this post and sending me my new hair care favorites for free for a review!
